About the place

The mosque was inaugurated on 31 May 1913 in the presence of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth, on the site of an 1822–1823 mosque demolished in 1910. The plans are by the architect Victor Ștefănescu, and the reinforced concrete structure was designed by the engineer Gogu Constantinescu, one of the first of its kind in Romania. Muslims call it 'Kral camisi', the King's Mosque.

The central hall is a 14 m square, and its floor is covered by a 144 m² oriental carpet made at Hereke in Turkey and brought from the island of Ada Kaleh. A 140-step staircase climbs inside the minaret, and reviews say the city and the port can be seen from the top. On 28 September 2026 the city hall issued the permit to consolidate and restore the mosque, with 36 months of works, so access may change.
