About the place

Construction began in 1904, on King Carol I's initiative, to plans by the architect Petre Antonescu. Once the foundations were done, the design was changed by the architect Daniel Renard, who gave the building its present Art Nouveau form, with the shell motif on the façade. The Casino opened on 15 August 1910. By the 2000s it had been abandoned and was decaying; after restoration it reopened to the public in May 2025 as a purely cultural venue, with no gambling.

Inside are the exhibitions 'Istoria Cazinoului' (the Casino's history) and 'Povești din adâncurile Mării Negre' (stories from the depths of the Black Sea), while the Hall of Mirrors, which looks out to sea, is temporarily closed. Since spring 2026 the City Grill Cazino café-bistro has occupied the ground floor, the basement and a sea-facing terrace. The promenade in front is open at all times and leads to the Genoese Lighthouse.
